Jackson police have arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff and charged him with murder in the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Mississippi woman found hanging from a tree last month. The state medical examiner’s determination of homicide provided the necessary basis for the arrest.

Fortune’s death has sent shockwaves through the Black community in Mississippi, where incidents of people found hanging from trees have become too frequent. Her mother, Dora Spivey, has been a vocal advocate for justice, stating, “I just started crying and told them ‘thank you, thank you, thank you.’”

Fortune was a mother of four who had struggled with homelessness in recent years. Her case highlights the vulnerabilities that systemic issues like poverty and lack of support systems create for Black individuals. The arrest of Ratliff marks a significant step forward in the investigation but does not signify the end of the road. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that more arrests could follow.

Chief Brackney also highlighted the importance of protecting the integrity of the investigation by not disclosing too much information prematurely. The case remains open, with more evidence expected to come to light during Ratliff’s court appearance scheduled for Monday.
