Egypt Shuts Down Mada Masr and Fines Editor Lina Attalah for Unlicensed Operation, Threatening Media Freedom
The New Cairo Misdemeanours court has ordered the shutdown of independent news outlet Mada Masr and fined its editor in chief, Lina Attalah, three million Egyptian pounds for operating an unlicensed website. Attalah was taken into police custody pending payment of the fine. This decision is seen as a significant setback for media freedom in Egypt.
Mada Masr has long been a vocal critic of government policies and has provided a platform for marginalized voices. Despite the legal challenges, the outlet remains committed to continuing its mission through alternative means. Originally reported by AllAfrica
