Sunny Akhigbe, founder of A Boy and His Dream Foundation, is set to lead a food drive on October 8 in Chicago, aiming to feed 10 shelters housing women, children, youth, and elderly people. The event, in partnership with Akamai Technologies and Phenomenal Fitness, underscores the ongoing struggle for food security within marginalized communities, a critical issue that disproportionately affects Black neighborhoods.

Akhigbe’s foundation was born out of his personal experience of being born out of wedlock in Nigeria and facing rejection and deprivation. His journey to the United States and eventual success inspired him to create a nonprofit that addresses the needs of children and families in both Chicago and Nigeria. The foundation’s initiatives focus on education, mentorship, health, and nutrition, directly addressing systemic issues that perpetuate poverty and inequality.

The food drive is part of a broader effort to foster community resilience and self-sufficiency. Akhigbe emphasizes the importance of empathy and direct action in combating systemic issues, stating, “The more food we have to give out, the more we’re keeping people in those shelters calm.” This sentiment echoes the broader struggle for economic empowerment and social justice within Black communities, where systemic barriers often limit access to basic necessities and opportunities.

Akhigbe’s foundation recently received Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, a significant milestone that underscores the global impact of local initiatives. This status allows the foundation to present cases against injustices and human rights violations, particularly those affecting children and women. The achievement highlights the growing recognition of grassroots organizations in advocating for systemic change and highlights the need for international support in addressing local issues.

The event in Chicago is a testament to the power of community partnerships and corporate responsibility. Akamai Technologies, a company with a history of community involvement, is supporting the food drive, reflecting a growing trend of businesses engaging with social causes. This collaboration not only helps to alleviate immediate needs but also fosters a sense of collective responsibility and solidarity.

“Instead of consuming, feed someone,” Akhigbe urges, encouraging community members to participate in the food drive. This call to action is more than just a simple act of charity; it is a step toward building a more equitable society where everyone has the resources to thrive. By focusing on direct action and community engagement, initiatives like these lay the groundwork for long-term systemic change and empowerment.
