The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary with “The Reunion,” a series of multi-day events scheduled for September 24-27, 2021. This milestone marks a decade since the museum opened its doors on the National Mall, bringing together millions of visitors from around the world to experience African American history and culture in a unique and comprehensive way.

Since its inception, the NMAAHC has welcomed nearly 14 million visitors from 200 countries, reflecting its global impact and significance. The museum has been instrumental in educating over 1.1 million K-12 students, teachers, and families through workshops and public programs. Its digital presence has also grown exponentially, with the Searchable Museum platform attracting over 65 million visits and generating nearly 897 million social media impressions.

Acting Museum Director Shanita Brackett highlighted the importance of the anniversary, stating, “It is an absolute privilege to celebrate NMAAHC’s first decade on the National Mall—a dream more than 100 years in the making.” Brackett emphasized the contributions of countless individuals who have supported the museum’s mission over the years.

The anniversary celebration, themed “Welcome Home: Our Legacy Continues,” will extend beyond the museum’s physical space to include The Wharf, a site rich in historical significance. The Wharf was the location of the 1848 Pearl incident, where 77 enslaved individuals attempted to escape to freedom. By incorporating this historic site into the celebration, the museum honors the enduring legacy of resilience and determination.

The events kick off on September 24 with a full day of museum activations, followed by a series of public programs and signature events through September 27. These include a special edition of Understanding America, a conversation led by award-winning journalist Laura Coates, and a fundraising evening at The Wharf featuring performances by Jermaine Dupri and DJ D-Nice. The museum’s Sweet Home Café will also celebrate the anniversary with a special menu curated by Executive Chef Ramin Coles.

As the museum looks ahead to its next decade, it continues to expand its reach through digital platforms and educational initiatives, ensuring that the stories and achievements of African Americans are preserved and shared for future generations. This celebration not only marks a decade of growth and impact but also reaffirms the museum’s commitment to empowering and uplifting Black communities.
