Lisa Bonet’s Denial Leaves Denise Huxtable’s Future in "A Different World" Uncertain
Lisa Bonet’s return to "A Different World" as Denise Huxtable remains uncertain, despite the growing buzz around the Netflix revival. The show, which originally aired from 1987 to 1993, has captured the hearts of fans once again with its second season premiere. The revival, set decades after the original series ended, has sparked a wave of nostalgia and excitement, dubbed "Hillman hysteria," on social media.
Denise Huxtable, a character beloved for her strength and resilience, is central to the show’s narrative. Lisa Bonet, who played Denise for one season, hasn’t confirmed her involvement in the revival. Darryl M. Bell, who reprises his role as Ron Johnson, hinted that Bonet’s absence might be due to her personal and professional journey moving forward. "I think she… has decided there’s a different path in life," Bell stated, suggesting that Bonet has evolved beyond her Hillman days.
Bonet’s last significant appearance as Denise was in 2006 during a “Hillman College Reunion Week” special on Nick-at-Nite. In that footage, Bonet shared that Denise married, had a child, and traveled extensively after college. This aligns with the show’s new storyline, where Denise’s son is a college student. However, Bonet’s departure from the original series wasn’t unique; Marisa Tomei, who played Maggie Lauten in the first season, also left early on.
Tomei, now 61, shared on "Today with Hoda and Jenna" that she and Bonet were roommates during the show’s filming. "We’re very close, and during that time too, she had a house in Venice, and I moved in with her, and we shot the show. We were roommates at the same time," Tomei said, highlighting the deep bond they formed. Their friendship has endured over the years, reflecting the lasting impact of the show on its cast and audience.
Despite the uncertainty of Bonet’s return, the revival has secured a second season thanks to fan support and social media engagement. Showrunner Felicia Pride credited the audience for the renewal, emphasizing the importance of community in keeping the show alive. Debbie Allen, a director known for her work on the original series, echoed Pride’s sentiment, celebrating the revival’s success.
While Lisa Bonet’s return is not confirmed, her character’s legacy continues through her son’s journey at Hillman College. The show’s revival highlights the enduring impact of "A Different World" on Black culture and education, reflecting the show’s original mission to inspire and uplift.
