Heber-Overgaard Torn Apart by Violent Storm; Community Begins Recovery Efforts
A tornado tore through the small Arizona community of Heber-Overgaard Wednesday night, leaving significant damage in its wake. Roads are closed, power lines are down, and residents are assessing the extent of the destruction. The National Weather Service has yet to confirm the tornado, but local officials and meteorologists agree that the storm’s impact strongly indicates a touchdown.
One resident recounted the terrifying moment when a sudden burst of violent wind and flying debris hit their home, lasting only 30 to 45 seconds. The house was pelted with debris, a large part of a neighbor’s tree fell, and another neighbor’s windows shattered. The resident, who has lived in Heber for decades, reported no warning before the wind hit and took immediate cover on the floor with her dogs.
State Representative Walt Blackman, who represents the area, has called on Governor Katie Hobbs to declare a state of emergency to mobilize emergency resources and personnel for the affected community. Emergency officials are still assessing the situation, and one injury has been reported. The American Red Cross is coordinating a shelter at the Navajo County Heber Complex for displaced residents.
The sheriff’s office is urging residents to avoid State Route 260 between Mogollon and the Overgaard Airpark, as well as areas north of State Route 377 extending toward Tonto. The reception center is open for displaced residents who need immediate assistance.
Rep. Blackman plans to personally visit the affected areas tomorrow to evaluate the damage and coordinate response efforts. He emphasized the need to protect lives, restore electrical service, ensure public safety, and provide assistance to families whose homes and property have been damaged.
Community resilience in the face of natural disasters is a testament to the strength and solidarity of Heber-Overgaard. As the community begins to recover, it highlights the importance of preparedness and collective support in overcoming such challenges.
