Delaware State University (DSU) in Dover, Delaware, is making headlines again this year with its spectacular Homecoming event. Founded in 1891 as the State College for Colored Students, DSU has grown into a bustling hub of education and community engagement. With a record-high enrollment of 6,623 students in Fall 2025, DSU continues to set benchmarks for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation.

The surge in student numbers reflects a broader trend of HBCUs attracting more students due to their strong academic programs and vibrant campus communities. Dr. Patrice Gilliam, Provost of DSU, highlights the dedication of incoming students, noting that the largest class of Delaware Inspire scholars since the program’s inception 15 years ago has arrived. These students, many of whom benefit from the state-sponsored Inspire program—a fully funded scholarship for Delaware students with a 2.75 GPA and a commitment to public service—come to DSU ready to tackle demanding coursework and make a difference in their fields.

The Inspire program is a key factor in DSU’s success, offering financial support to students who might otherwise face barriers to higher education. This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, which is crucial for the development of future leaders within the Black community. The university’s dedication to student success is evident in its comprehensive support services, from academic advising to career development, ensuring that students have the resources they need to achieve their full potential.

Delaware State University’s Homecoming event is not just a celebration of school spirit and tradition but also a showcase of the university’s vibrant community and the achievements of its students and alumni. The event brings together current students, alumni, and community members, fostering a sense of unity and pride that is essential for the growth and resilience of Black communities. Homecoming at DSU is a testament to the university’s enduring legacy and its role as a pillar of education and empowerment.

Notable alumni from DSU include NFL All-Pro cornerback and Kerry Washington’s husband, highlighting the diverse range of success stories that emerge from the university. These alumni serve as role models and inspirations to current and future students, demonstrating the potential for academic and professional excellence within the HBCU system.
