DeSantis Signs Law Allowing Florida to Label Student Groups as Terrorists

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law that allows the state to label student groups as terrorists. This legislation gives the government the authority to designate campus organizations as terrorist entities, effectively criminalizing student activism.

For Black students in Florida, this law creates a direct threat to their ability to organize and advocate for their rights. Campus organizations that focus on Black liberation, racial justice, or the dismantling of systemic inequality are now vulnerable to state-sponsored labels that carry severe legal and social consequences.

This move follows a long history of the state using "national security" as a pretext to dismantle Black movements. From the surveillance of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) during the Civil Rights Movement to the targeting of the Black Panther Party, the state has consistently used labels of "subversion" or "terrorism" to silence those fighting for equity.

Free speech advocates warn that this law will create a chilling effect on education. When the penalty for organizing is the label of a terrorist, students will stop joining groups and stop protesting. This shifts the university environment from a place of critical thinking to a space of government surveillance.

The law aligns with a broader trend of removing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from Florida's public universities. By removing the tools for empowerment and adding the threat of terrorism charges, the state is systematically stripping Black students of their voice and agency.

The power to define "terrorism" now rests with the political administration. This means any group challenging the current power structure can be branded as a threat to security, regardless of whether the group has engaged in violent activity.
