The BRICS nations, including South Africa, are stepping up their technological integration to bolster trade ties, with digital platforms emerging as key tools. This move is not merely about enhancing communication and business opportunities but is deeply rooted in a broader strategy to reduce Western dominance and strengthen cooperation among emerging economies. According to Mtho Xulu, president of the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a digital platform can facilitate easier communication and exposure of business opportunities. However, this digital push also highlights a significant challenge: the digital divide, which could hinder progress if not addressed. Xulu acknowledges that while there are challenges, the investment in digital infrastructure presents a critical opportunity for growth.

The upcoming BRICS forum, scheduled for Saturday, will delve into a range of topics, including economic cooperation, energy, food security, technology, supply chains, and reforms to global institutions. A key focus will be reducing reliance on the US dollar, with BRICS members promoting the use of their own currencies in trade and payments. This shift is part of a larger strategy to challenge the dominance of Western financial institutions, which have historically marginalized developing economies. China and Russia, in particular, see BRICS as a platform to amplify their influence and assert their economic and political clout.

Historically, BRICS was established as a counterbalance to Western economic dominance. Founded two decades ago, the group has grown to include 11 full member states and 10 partner countries, representing about half the world's population and a significant portion of global economic output. The expansion of BRICS reflects a growing recognition of the need for greater representation of developing countries in global institutions. The group's increasing influence is evident in its push for reforms in global institutions, which have often been dominated by Western powers.

For Black communities, the technological push within BRICS represents both an opportunity and a challenge. On one hand, it could lead to greater economic empowerment and self-sufficiency, allowing for the development of local industries and reduction of dependency on Western markets. On the other hand, the digital divide threatens to exacerbate existing inequalities, unless concerted efforts are made to bridge the gap. The resilience of Black communities requires not only resistance to external dominance but also strategic planning and investment in technology and infrastructure. By doing so, BRICS member states can ensure that technological advancement benefits all segments of society, fostering a more inclusive and equitable global economy.
