Black Literary Community Comes Together for Kinfolk Lit Fest, July 16-18, 2027
Casey Kelley is set to launch Kinfolk Lit Fest, a groundbreaking festival dedicated to celebrating the Black literary community, in Indianapolis from July 16 to July 18, 2027. This three-day event promises to be a pivotal moment for Black authors and literature enthusiasts, featuring over 200 participants, including renowned writers like Tayari Jones, Jason Reynolds, and Sadeqa Johnson.
Kelley’s vision for Kinfolk Lit Fest is rooted in the idea of fostering a supportive community for Black writers and readers. The festival, which will take place at the Indianapolis Convention Center, aims to provide a space where Black authors can share their work freely and engage in candid conversations about the challenges and triumphs of the literary world. "Kinfolk Lit Fest is a family reunion," Kelley explains. "It’s a space where creatives, literary professionals, and book lovers can celebrate the brilliance and dignity of Black stories."
The inspiration behind Kinfolk Lit Fest stems from Kelley’s experience with Essence Festival, where she noticed a gap in the programming for Black authors. She envisioned creating a standalone event that would highlight the diverse voices within the Black literary community. Over time, Kelley realized that existing literary events often catered to specific genres or self-published authors, leaving many Black authors without a platform to showcase their work. "Within the book space, specifically the Black book community, there are events that fall under two umbrellas: indie and genre-specific," Kelley notes. "This leaves out many talented authors who don’t fit into these categories."
Kelley’s determination to create a more inclusive platform led to the development of Kinfolk Lit Fest. The festival is designed to offer a range of activities, including panel discussions, live readings, workshops, and keynote addresses, all centered around the rich tapestry of Black literature. By bringing together established and emerging authors, the festival seeks to build a stronger, more resilient literary ecosystem that supports and uplifts Black voices.
Kinfolk Lit Fest is also a testament to the power of community and collective support. The festival will take place during Indiana Black Expo weekend, ensuring that family members and partners of attendees can enjoy the festivities at Indiana Black Expo for free. This collaboration not only strengthens the local community but also ensures that the literary event reaches a wider audience.
For Kelley, Kinfolk Lit Fest is more than just an event—it’s a mission to empower and elevate Black authors and readers. As she looks to the future, Kelley’s goal is to establish Kinfolk Lit Fest as a long-lasting institution that continues to thrive beyond her involvement. "This is an event for the Black literary ecosystem that should evolve well beyond my years," Kelley asserts.
