**The 25th Amendment Won't Remove Trump — And The People Who Can Won't Even Try**

More than 85 Democratic lawmakers in the House and Senate have called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office or impeached after he posted on Truth Social that Iran's "whole civilization will die tonight" — a statement that former CIA Director John Brennan, Trump's own former White House counsel Ty Cobb, and even former allies like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones publicly called insane. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found 61 percent of Americans — including three in ten Republicans — now agree that Trump has "become erratic with age." But the constitutional mechanism everyone is pinning their hopes on, the 25th Amendment, was not built for this situation, and the people with the power to use it have zero intention of doing so.

The 25th Amendment, ratified in 1967 after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, was designed for a narrow scenario — a president who suffers a stroke, falls into a coma, or develops a condition that physically prevents them from doing the job. Section 4, the part generating all the headlines, requires the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the president unfit. Vice President J.D. Vance and every member of Trump's handpicked Cabinet remain loyal to him. Not one has broken ranks. The amendment was never intended to be a tool for removing a president over policy disagreements or dangerous behavior — it was built for medical emergencies, not political ones.

Even in a scenario where Vance and the Cabinet somehow acted, the 25th Amendment gives Trump an immediate path back. He simply sends a letter to Congress declaring himself fit, and he resumes power. The vice president would then have to challenge him a second time, both chambers of Congress would have to debate his mental fitness, and it would take a two-thirds supermajority in both the House and the Senate to keep him out. That is an even higher bar than impeachment, which only requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate. In a Republican-controlled Congress, those numbers do not exist.

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin introduced a 10-page bill to create a 17-member commission authorized under Section 4 to assess whether the 25th Amendment should be invoked. The bill has the support of 85 Democrats. But the legislation would have to pass through a GOP-controlled Congress and survive a presidential veto — making it dead on arrival. The White House called the entire push "pathetic." Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams went further than her colleagues and called for outright impeachment, arguing it offers a more permanent solution than the revolving door the 25th Amendment creates.

The NAACP issued a direct statement calling for Trump's immediate removal. "The rhetoric and behavior we are witnessing from Trump isn't just alarming, it's dangerous," said NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. "When the person entrusted with the highest office in the land demonstrates a disregard for truth, stability, and the well-being of the American people, it's a threat to the entire nation and the world." That statement carries weight — the NAACP does not make removal calls lightly.

For Black communities, the stakes run deeper than one man's fitness for office. The chaos Trump generates is not incidental to the agenda — it is the agenda. While the country debates his mental state, his administration has been gutting civil rights protections, rolling back diversity and equity initiatives, expanding warrantless surveillance authorities that have historically targeted Black organizers, and unleashing ICE raids across multiple states. The same government that shrugs at Trump's threats against an entire civilization also shrugs at the brutalization of Black and brown communities at home. Every news cycle spent debating whether he is crazy is a news cycle not spent organizing against the machinery operating behind him.

The hard truth is that the constitutional guardrails — the 25th Amendment, impeachment, the courts — were built on foundations that assumed the people in power would act in good faith. That assumption has collapsed. No cabinet of loyalists will remove their own patron. No Republican-controlled Congress will vote to convict. The mid-term elections in 2026 represent the nearest realistic checkpoint, and even a massive blue wave would only begin the process of unwinding the damage. Black people in this country have faced worse and organized through it — from Ida B. Wells to Ella Baker to the generation that built the Civil Rights Movement from the ground up. The solution will not come from a constitutional clause. It will come from the same place it has always come from: organized people who refuse to sit still while their rights are stripped away.
